Published on May 15, 2024

Grab your line and pole and get ready to head to the fishing hole for the 40th annual Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 1.

Held at Brahan Springs Park Lagoon, the popular free event offers plenty of fun for young anglers aged 6-12.

Thanks to generous support from Buster’s Bait and Tackle and over 20 community partners, the lagoon will be teeming with 250 pounds of catfish. Among them, 25 lucky fish will be tagged, offering participants the chance to reel in special prizes. Additionally, top anglers across various categories stand the chance to win coveted awards.

“This event holds a special place in our hearts,” said Huntsville Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “It’s a wonderful way for families to unwind and enjoy the simple joy of fishing.”

Registration starts at 7 a.m. The fishing rodeo begins at 8 a.m. and will be followed by award announcements at 10.

While children can receive assistance with baiting their lines and handling their catch, they must independently hook and reel in their fish. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs, fishing equipment and bait to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all.
