Public meeting to address Magnolia Terrace historic resource survey

Citizens will soon have an opportunity to learn about and discuss a planned historic resource survey of Huntsville’s Magnolia Terrace neighborhood.

The public meeting is set for 7 p.m., March 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church Fellowship Hall, located at 2300 Beasley Ave. NW, Huntsville. Survey Consultant Dr. Caroline Swope and City of Huntsville Preservation Planner Katie Stamps will answer questions and share updates about ongoing field work.

“With this survey, the City will document the historically significant structures and collect invaluable research that will aid in the continued identification of other resources associated with Huntsville’s Black community,” Stamps said. “The City anticipates pursuing a more comprehensive survey of sites associated with Huntsville’s Black history and this survey will be a major asset to support that effort.”

The survey represents the first phase in a multiphase process to assess Magnolia Terrace’s eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Listing Magnolia Terrace to the NRHP would not result in any regulations or restrictions on homeowners to make alterations to their properties up to and including demolition.

The meeting will be of particular interest to former and current residents of Magnolia Terrace. Members of the public who have photos or memories of Magnolia Terrace are also invited to attend.
