Huntsville amends vehicle noise ordinance

Published on February 14, 2025

Responding to numerous resident complaints, the City toughened its noise ordinance relating to vehicles. The City Council voted 4-0 to approve the amendment proposed by Council Member Jennie Robinson.

Under the amendment, the City may assess a $50 fine for first-time violators. Those cited for a noise violation will have the opportunity to remedy the issue and avoid the fine. A second violation within a 12-month period would result in a $250 fine. A third violation within a 12-month period will result in a $500 fine, 10 days in jail or both.

“We worked with the City’s legal team to create revisions that add increased fines for repeat offenders,” Council Member Robinson said. “The best part about this ordinance is that the first offense is still a ‘fix it’ citation. Fines only come into play when someone deliberately violates the ordinance after a first citation.”

Robinson said that the changes are a direct response to citizens who value quiet neighborhoods and to HPD officers who needed an ordinance that helps them enforce the law.

The amended ordinance goes into effect March 1.

“The Huntsville Police Department is committed to ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for all residents,” Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles said. “Excessive noise is a frequent source of concern in our community, impacting quality of life and public safety. The amendment to the noise ordinance, which includes increased fines for violations, aims to encourage compliance and reduce repeat offenses. Our officers will continue to work diligently to enforce these regulations fairly and consistently, helping to maintain the quality of life that Huntsville residents value and deserve.”
