The City of Huntsville, along with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Office of Gov. Kay Ivey, celebrated the opening of the Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The overpass is the latest project in a long-term commitment to upgrading Huntsville’s transportation system through the Restore Our Roads partnership with ALDOT. The Restore Our Roads program included improvements such as new overpasses and access roads on Memorial Parkway in south Huntsville, the widening of Cecil Ashburn Drive and the new Northern Bypass (State Route 255), among others.
“Completing the Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road is a major win for Huntsville’s transportation infrastructure,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “Drivers can now travel Memorial Parkway for more than 10 miles through the heart of the city with no traffic signals and no intersections, which enhances the flow of traffic and helps everyone get to their destination safely.
“We thank the Alabama Department of Transportation for their partnership that helped turn this project into a reality and look forward to working together on future projects.”
District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins was joined by state Sen. Sam Givhan and state Reps. Laura Hall and Rex Reynolds at the ceremony.
“What does this overpass mean for north Huntsville?” Council Member Watkins said. “In short, it means a lot. This area is growing with a recent surge in new home construction and lots more on the way. New retail developments have already happened and even more will be happening soon. And it’s a significant quality-of-life improvement not only for residents but for visitors as well.”
The underpass at the interchange remains under construction but work is expected to be completed before the Thanksgiving holiday.
