City Council – Meeting Highlights from April 26, 2018

Huntsville City Council

Planning

Council set a public hearing for May 24 on a request to create a new zoning classification called “Research Park 2 District” that would create a live, work, play node and include opportunities for mixed-use development where applied in Cummings Research Park East.


Economic Development

Council passed a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement between the City of Huntsville and Gulf Services Contracting, Inc. for Construction services for Huntsville Municipal Annex Demolition in the amount of $698,773.

Clerk-Treasurer

Council amended the Code of Ordinances to allow short-term home rentals to obtain a business license through the City of Huntsville and collect lodging tax, as traditional hotels and motels do. Short term rentals are defined as rentals of less than 180 consecutive days.

Engineering

Council passed a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement between the City of Huntsville and The State of Alabama for Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Dallas Branch & Pinhook Creek Flood Mitigation Program, Project No. 71-18-DR01.

The FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant aims to reduce the flooding potential within the area northeast of Downtown Huntsville. The scope of the project will include acquisition and construction to modify 7 drainage crossings,  installation of 19-acre storage basin and approximately 6,800 feet of channel improvements along Dallas Branch and Pinhook Creek. The total budget for the project is $15,908622. The City’s financial obligation is $954,517.

Board Appointments

Mark Lumb was reappointed to the Huntsville and Madison County Railroad Authority, Place 3, for a term to expire May 22, 2023, by Council Member Robinson.

Dane Block was appointed to the Huntsville and Madison County Railroad Authority, Place 2, for a term to expire May 22, 2023, by Council Member Russell.

Jason Thomas was appointed to the Burritt Memorial Committee, for a term to expire March 25, 2021, by Council Member Robinson.
